Fishing Nicaraguan Style

We went sailing today. As we returned to the dock, there were a bunch of fishermen who were apparently fishing for Pelicans! They were all standing on the dock and throwing their lines out each one with a 4 to 6 inch live fish attached with a large hook through its backbone. There were at least as many pelicans in the water trying to grab the fish off the lines. Of course they were actually fishing for much bigger fish using the smaller ones as bait. However, it was quite the spectacle to watch these Pelicans trying to steal the bait, and they were very persistent. We actually saw one get the bait, but then got tangled in the line. The fisherman just hauled the Pelican up to the dock, untangle him, and drop him back into the water.

The other interesting thing to note was that no one was using a fishing pole. They just had a board with the fishing line wrapped around it. The fisherman would swing the fish around and let it fly, then wind the string back up around his board.
