La Cangreja

La Cangreja is Costa Rica's newest (I think) national park. It is only 41 kilometers from where we live, so I thought we should go and take a look. Most of the drive is along a dirt road that winds through the Costa Rican mountain side.

There aren't really any facilities there. There is a ranger station/house. I spoke with the park ranger for a while and he described what there is to do. Basically there is a trail that leads down into the valley and then up the other side. Like all national parks in CR you have to pay an entrance fee, and the fee is much cheaper for Ticos than it is for foreigners. I told him that we were Americans but that we are now living in Puriscal. After a few moments speaking with his associate, he came out and announced that we could go in for free!

There is one river and multiple streams that you cross. The river has a suspension bridge over it. For the streams you are on your own. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, and it would be a lot of fun to hike around the entire park. As it was, we didn't have that much time and rain was coming so we took a short hike and then left.

If you'd like to see some pictures, you can find them on flickr.
